Abu Dhabi School Model

The Abu Dhabi School Model, earlier known as New School Model, is a bilingual curriculum that was introduced by ADEC in 2015. The aim of the model is to unify curriculum and place emphasis on science subjects, as a result of which graduates will be better suited to the demands of the country’s labour market.

Science, technology, engineering and maths, or Stem, make up nearly 50 per cent of a unified state school curriculum for Years 10 to 12. Pupils entering Year 11 have had to choose between science or humanities, which they study until graduation.

Year 11 students spend 21 periods a week studying Stem subjects, including eight of maths, four physics and six periods devoted to two science options. They also choose a technology class such as ICT, creative design or computer programming, which take up three periods a week.

Being a city that welcomes people from all around the world, Abu Dhabi is home to schools that follow different curriculums such as Canadian, Philippine, German, French, Japanese, Iranian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, SABIS and International Baccalaureate.

Canadian Curriculum – The Canadian curriculum is designed to elicit development and quality of people’s cognition through the guiding of accommodations of individuals to their natural environment and their changing social order. Subjects that typically get assessed (i.e., language arts, mathematics, and science) assume greater importance than non-assessed subjects (i.e., music, visual arts, and physical education) or facets of the curriculum (i.e., reading and writing versus speaking and listening).

Philippine Curriculum – The Philippine curriculum follows the system of K-12 (kindergarten to Grade 12). The education system is similar to that of the American system, wherein junior high school runs from Grade 7 to Grade 8 and senior high school is for students pursuing 11th and 12th. In the senior high school, students may choose a specialization based on aptitude, interests, and school capacity. The choice of career track will define the content of the subjects a student will take in Grades 11 and 12. Senior high school subjects fall under either the core curriculum or specific tracks.

Last comes the lycée, which educates students during their final three years of secondary education. Pupils aged 15-18 study to undertake the crucial baccalauréat exam which they must pass in order to enter university.
